Northern Holiday, 1951 [motion picture].

This color film documents Scripps Institution of Oceanography Northern Holiday Expedition of 1951. Although it is silent, it is accompanied by a film sequence list that identifies action and individuals in the film. The film depicts research and personnel aboard R/V HORIZON during Northern Holiday Expedition. The film includes images of John Isaacs, H. William Menard, Alan C. Smith, Warren Wooster, and James Stewart. The film includes images of the deployment of instruments including the mid-water trawl and operations aboard the vessel including a hydrographic cast, horizontal net-tow, rock dredging and gravity coring. Northern Holiday Expedition was the second major postwar Scripps Institution of Oceanography expedition to the deep Pacific. It explored an area in the eastern North Pacific from Hawaii to the Gulf of Alaska, partially retracing the historic Challenger Expedition track of 1873-1876. This was a little known region at the time, a "holiday" area in naval parlance, hence the name of the expedition.
